All About the New Campaign #TheyDressed2H8

Dolce & Gabbana is the ONLY fashion house to actually design outfits for the current First Lady whose name shall NOT be mentioned here! Apparently, they may have designed that "I don't really care, do u?" jacket that she wore at a meeting regarding immigration reform and migrant families a couple of years back. A third L for Dolce & Gabbana involves a promotional ad implying that Asians don't know how to eat spaghetti. Then, Prada jumped on board with Dolce & Gabbana by releasing a line of monkey keychains that turned out to be minstrel shows against people of color. Long before such an L, I did hear talk that Prada has been racist before. Between Dolce & Gabbana and Prada, H&M crossed the line with an ad campaign in which the team fitted children of color in shirts that implied that they were "cool jungle monkeys". Then, Moncler jumped on board with the three questionable fashion houses mentioned above and released a minstrel show of a black parka. And sadly, just as my love for Gucci was growing stronger, said fashion house decided to release a minstrel show of a sweater. I have never felt more betrayed than when such an L happened. Now, most recently, Burberry held a fashion show in which they fitted their models in a clothing line that accessorized nooses as necklaces or scarves, thus making a tasteless joke out of suicide and lynching. This made me SO fuckin' mad at clothes, considering the fact that Kate Spade killed herself by hanging last year!!

This is turning out to be a shitty year for fashion, what with the recent death of Karl Lagerfield, the chairman of Chanel and Fendi. Given the controversy surrounding today's clothes, accessories, and advertisements, I feel like today's designers have absolutely NO class compared to the untouchable legacies of Spade and Lagerfield. Plus, I did come across several tweets that suggested that the fashion houses causing tons of outrage should have hired people of color to design clothes, accessories, and campaigns BEFORE releasing the offensive material they way they did. I agreed with those tweets, but I felt that part of the issue was on me since I used to wear or carry some material designed by some of the fashion houses in question.

Thus, I decided to participate in a movement called #TheyDressed2H8 under which I vow to be seen with a minimal amount of clothes on, with only lingerie on, or with swimsuits on. I will continue to look like that UNTIL fashion houses actually hire a person of color to design clothes and accessories and put together ad campaigns deemed fit for ALL audiences. And yes, this message also goes out to every store selling shirts that say "Cool story, babe. Now, bitch, make me a sandwich!". Surely, my ass, nipples, genitalia, and curves are gladly unable to convey messages this fucked up to audiences, let alone people of color. NEVER have I EVER in my lifetime heard about Playboy or Victoria's Secret clothing or advertisements resembling blackface, calling children of color monkeys, expressing disdain for migrant families, telling girls to make sandwiches for supremacists, or telling Asians they don't know how to eat spaghetti.

Furthermore, under #TheyDressed2H8, I will carry or wear fake versions of Gucci, Prada, Burberry, and Dolce & Gabbana material. I will even shop for said fakes from whatever store or kiosk I come across. So, the next time people tell me to put some clothes on or to delete certain tweets, pictures, or vlogs, they will always be reminded of how clothes have evolved to evoke hate and prompt us to refuse to wear anything UNTIL ALL FASHION HOUSES consider the cultural histories of every audience in the world when making a design or an advertisement. Believe me, this movement is hell of a lot more than your average Slutwalk or the old saying "I'd rather go naked than wear fur".
